for Woodwind Quintet
BirdSong is the first in a series of pieces for Woodwind Quintet. The concept of this piece begins as its title suggests, with that often explored musical concept of recreating bird calls. In this first movement we are introduced to the early bird, a spirited little creature characterized by a 'bugle-like,' imitative motive that soon spreads throughout the forest to its woodland brethren. The petulant little motive is developed into an antiphonal chorus of singing birds, heralding the new day! For all of its playful imagery, this piece was created out of a sincere love for the medium of the Woodwind Quintet and is appropriate for advanced players.
